The Colombo High Court has sentenced Sarana Gunawardena to four years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for each of the four corruption cases filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), after he was found guilty.
In addition, the court imposed a fine of Rs. 1.8 million for the cases.
The verdict was delivered by Colombo High Court Judge Mohamed Mihail after the conclusion of the trial.
The Bribery Commission had filed these four cases against Sarana Gunawardena over allegations that, while serving as Chairman of the Development Lotteries Board in 2006, he caused financial losses to the government by acting in a manner that benefited the owners of three vehicles hired on a rental basis for the institution.
