The Sri Lankan team participating in the Olympics in Paris, France, is scheduled to leave the island starting from the 17th of this month.

The Olympics will be held from July 20th to August 11th, and the National Olympic Committee will cover all expenses for the Sri Lankan team. Javelin thrower Nadisha Dilhani Lekamge and batsman Viren Nettasinghe will have the honor of carrying the Sri Lankan flag at the Olympic opening ceremony.

This year, Sri Lanka will be represented by six athletes and nine officials.

The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games will take place on July 26, with Dilhani Lekamge and Viren Nettasinghe serving as the flag-bearers for Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan contingent, consisting of three athletes, three swimmers, eight officials, and one chef de mission, will participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, from July 26 to August 11.

This year’s team includes athletes competing in badminton, swimming, and track and field events. Four athletes qualified through ranking points, while two athletes received wildcard entries. Notably, this is the smallest Sri Lankan contingent to participate in the Olympic Games, with nine athletes having participated in both the 2016 Rio Games and the 2020 Tokyo Games.

The Sri Lankan competitors are:

Viren Nettasinghe in badminton (Men's Singles)
Ganga Senevirathne (Women's 100m backstroke)
Kyle Abeysinghe (Men's 100m freestyle)
Tharushi Karunarathne (Women's 800m)
Dilhani Lekamge (Women's javelin throw)
Aruna Dharshana (Men's 400m)

Nettasinghe, currently ranked 74th in the world, is the youngest individual on the list to secure a direct qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Senevirathne qualified with 688 FINA points, while Abeysinghe earned his spot with 776 FINA points. Lekamge is the highest-ranked Sri Lankan athlete on the Paris Olympic Games ranking list, ranking 25th among the top 32 qualifiers.

Karunarathne, who won a Gold Medal in the 800m at the 19th Asian Games, is ranked 44th among the top 48 qualifiers. Dharshana, ranked 47th among the top 48, is the only male track athlete from Sri Lanka participating this year and the first athlete from Sri Lanka to qualify for the Olympic 400m event in 20 years.
