United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said he’s “deeply alarmed” by ramped-up fighting in the Middle East, and has called for all attacks to “stop immediately”.
“The ceasefires in Lebanon, Iran, and Gaza must be fully respected. Any steps that could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts must be avoided,” Guterres said.
“I’m also deeply concerned by Israel’s decision to close crossings into Gaza and reiterate my call for the immediate reopening of all crossings to ensure the rapid, safe, and unhindered passage of humanitarian assistance at scale throughout Gaza.”
There are “no military solutions to the conflicts in the Middle East”, Guterres added.
“The only way forward is through dialogue and negotiations. I urge all concerned to work towards diplomatic solutions that advance regional and international peace and security.”
