The Kandy-Matale road (A9) has been temporarily closed at Akurana due to a fire that broke out in a shop and spread to several adjacent establishments, police reported.

Motorists are advised to use alternate routes to avoid inconveniences. The fire erupted in a three-story building complex that included a bakery shop, which has been completely destroyed.

Police Media Spokesperson DIG Nihal Talduwa confirmed that the Kandy-Matale A9 road closure was necessary due to the fire's spread this morning (05).

Additionally, reports indicate that a building housing an international school and several other buildings have been affected by the fire.

Efforts to control the blaze are ongoing, involving the Kandy Municipality's fire department, police, and local residents. While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined, police suspect an electrical or gas leak may be responsible.

This incident highlights the importance of emergency preparedness and the need for robust safety measures in commercial areas. The quick response by emergency services and the community's cooperation are commendable. Motorists are urged to heed traffic advisories and use alternate routes to ensure their safety.
