Sri Lanka’s tourism sector reached a record milestone in May, posting its highest-ever arrivals for the month at 145,745 visitors. This figure surpassed the previous May high of 132,919 recorded in 2025 and reflected a 9.65% year-on-year increase.

The strong performance was achieved despite disruptions caused by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which affected long-haul flight routes and pushed up travel costs in several key markets.

Data released by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) shows a gradual recovery in monthly arrivals, signalling improved momentum after several months of relatively modest growth.

May’s performance lifted total arrivals for the first five months of 2026 to more than 1.02 million. However, year-to-date arrivals remain slightly lower, down 1% compared to the same period in 2025.

Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath described the achievement as a major turning point for the industry, pointing to the sector’s recovery from pandemic-era lows.

In a social media post, he said May 2026 marked a “historic milestone” for Sri Lanka Tourism, noting the jump from just 1,497 arrivals in 2021 to nearly 150,000 today as evidence of improved stability, security, and policy direction.

Despite the record figures, industry stakeholders have urged caution. Hotels Association of Sri Lanka (THASL) President Asoka Hettigoda questioned whether the arrival numbers are being reflected in actual tourism earnings and hotel occupancy.

He said the data does not align with sector revenue trends, arguing that increased arrivals have not translated into corresponding growth in registered hotel bookings or industry income.

The gap has renewed debate over visitor composition, length of stay, spending patterns, and the extent to which tourists are using formal accommodation providers.

Tourism earnings for the first four months of 2026 fell 19.4% year-on-year to USD 1.11 billion, while April recorded a sharper 39% decline to USD 157.1 million — the weakest monthly performance since 2023.

SLTDA figures also indicate a slowdown at the beginning of June, with arrivals dropping 14.3% year-on-year during the first week of the month.

Cumulative arrivals for 2026 surpassed 1.04 million by early June, though still remained 1.2% below the corresponding period in 2025.

India remained Sri Lanka’s largest source market, followed by the United Kingdom and Russia, with China and Germany also among the key contributors.

To meet the government’s target of 3 million arrivals for 2026, Sri Lanka will need to attract nearly two million additional visitors in the remaining months of the year, accounting for around 65% of the annual goal.
