A US Army helicopter has crashed near the Strait of Hormuz.

US President Donald Trump said the two pilots on board the aircraft were unharmed but did not disclose the cause of the crash, which took place near the narrow waterway largely controlled by Iran this morning.

“Nobody injured. We are going to issue a report tomorrow. But the pilots are fine,” the US president told reporters.

Tehran’s state media acknowledged the crash, but did not elaborate. Apache attack helicopters have been a key asset for the US military in its attempt to prevent Iranian oil shipments passing through the shipping lane.

The Middle East is still reeling from yesterday’s air strikes by Iran and Israel, which have placed greater strain on the nominal ceasefire currently in place across the region.

Trump insisted negotiators were in the “final throes” of reaching a peace deal, adding that it would take “two or three days”.
