The Old Boys’ Association (OBA) of Maris Stella College, Negombo, hosted its Annual College Day Oration as part of the College Day celebrations under the “Maris Panorama” programme on Saturday, June 6 at 6.00 p.m. at the Maris Stella College OBA Building in Negombo.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Lakshman Nonis, an academic, teacher trainer, author, and education specialist with expertise in science education, teacher development, curriculum development, and education consultancy.

This year’s oration focused on education reforms in Sri Lanka and the need to reorient the national curriculum towards a more future-ready approach. Discussions highlighted the importance of moving beyond traditional classroom methods towards a system that develops student skills, competencies, creativity, critical thinking, digital literacy, and adaptability.

Speakers noted that while global education systems are rapidly evolving, many local classrooms continue to rely on outdated, memorisation-based teaching practices. The proposed shift emphasises a more student-centred, skills-based learning model designed to better prepare learners for the demands of the 21 century.

The concept further underscored the importance of inquiry-based learning, collaboration, communication, media and technology literacy, leadership, initiative, and productivity as key pillars of modern education.

It also highlighted the changing role of teachers, from traditional instructors to facilitators who guide and empower students to take greater ownership of their learning. The need for activity-based classrooms, subject-specific learning spaces, mobile laboratories, and STEAM education was also emphasised.

Organised by the Maris Stella College OBA, Negombo, the event brought together past pupils, educators, professionals, and well-wishers to reflect on the future of education and the importance of curriculum reform in preparing Sri Lankan students for a rapidly changing world.
