A Grama Niladhari officer from the Thanamalwila Divisional Secretariat and another individual, who are accused of demanding and receiving a Rs. 1 million bribe related to government compensation for cyclone damage, have been further remanded until the 23rd of this month by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today (9).

The suspects are V.G. Nimal, a Grama Niladhari attached to the Thanamalwila Divisional Secretariat, and a civilian identified as Krus Winston.

The case relates to allegations that the suspects solicited a bribe of Rs. 1 million from a complainant during the disbursement of the first installment of a Rs. 5 million government compensation package approved for full damage caused to a house due to Cyclone Ditwah.

Appearing for the Bribery Commission, officials informed court that although Rs. 2 million was scheduled to be released as the first installment, the suspects had allegedly demanded and obtained Rs. 1 million as a bribe.

Considering the submissions, the Magistrate ordered that all further investigations be completed and presented at the next court hearing.
