Franchises like Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Kings XI Punjab, Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders put out a list of players whom they want to retain or whom they want to release for the upcoming auction that will be held on February 11.
This will be the mini-auction and not the mega-auction for IPL 2022 in which there will be 10 teams and the majority of the players will be put in the auction pool. There were some interesting developments and it gives an indication as to what the franchises are thinking ahead of the IPL 2021.
Rajasthan Royals have released Steve Smith ahead of IPL 2021, with all the eight franchises set to soon announce the list of players they have retained ahead of the next auction, scheduled to be held next month.
Ahead of the retention, Harbhajan Singh took to Twitter to announce that his contract with the three-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings has ended. News agency ANI reported that CSK have retained their star all-rounder Suresh Raina while the likes of Kedar Jadhav and Piyush Chawla are set to be left out.
Both Jadhav and Chawla failed in the 13th edition of the T20 tournament, which was held in the United Arab Emirates due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Chennai Super Kings, the three-time champions who finished in the seventh position in the IPL 2020, will reportedly be releasing plenty of players as they look to revamp their squad.
Mumbai Indians
Defending champions Mumbai Indians are understood to have decided to release the pair of Lasith Malinga and Sherfane Rutherford. Malinga, the leading wicket-taker in the IPL, had opted out of the 2020 season due to his father’s ailing health at the time.
Malinga was bought by Mumbai in 2019 for INR 20 million, after the Sri Lankan bowling great sat out in 2018. He brought all his experience to deny the Super Kings the title with a superlative last over in 2019. It was the third time the Super Kings had fallen prey to Malinga having bowled successful final overs in 2013 and 2015 IPL finals to hand Mumbai the titles.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Sri Lankan Isuru Udana has been released by RCB.
RCB have released Moeen Ali, Shivam Dube, Gurkeerat Singh Mann, Aaron Finch, Chris Morris, Pavan Negi, Parthiv Patel, Dale Steyn, Isuru Udana, Umesh Yadav from their squad for IPL 2021.
Royal Challengers Bangalore have retained 12 players from their 2020 squad.
Earlier this month, veteran South African speedster Dale Steyn announced that he won't be featuring in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League. He stated that he was taking some time off, clarifying that he isn't retiring.

Rajasthan Royals have released skipper Steve Smith from their squad ahead of the next auction.
Kings XI Punjab
KXIP release Maxwell - the franchise has decided to release the Australian all-rounder.
The report further states that Sheldon Cottrell, K Gowtham, Mueeb ur Rahman, Jimmy Neesham, Hardus Viljoen and Karun Nair are among the released players.
Chennai Super Kings
Former Indian all-rounder Suresh Raina would be retained by Chennai Super Kings according to reports.
