Today marks 30 years since war hero Hasalaka Gamini Kularatne sacrificed his life to save the Elephant Pass camp from the LTTE.

Born on 22nd August 1966, Gamini was the second in a family of five boys and two girls.

After his father passed away when he was just 15 years, the family went through many hardships to succeed in life.

Gamini Kularatne joined the Sri Lanka Army in 1986.

Serving in operational duties in the Sinha regiment’s sixth force, on 14th July 1991 Gamini Kularatne armed himself with two grenades and jumped into the bulldozer of the terrorist laden with explosives and destroyed it and rescued the Elephant Pass camp from the LTTE, sacrificing his life in the process.
