The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the appointment of a committee chaired by retired Supreme Court Judge K.T. Chithrasiri, to assess and review the limitation of claims, allowances, and privileges granted to Members of Parliament (MPs), Ministers, and former Presidents.

The government bears a significant cost annually from public tax money to provide allowances and privileges to these elected officials. The need to reduce this expenditure has been recognized in the current fiscal space. The committee is tasked with studying the matter and submitting a detailed report with recommendations to the Treasury within two months. This will aim to limit unnecessary entitlements and introduce alternative methods.

The committee includes Retired Supreme Court Judge KT Chithrasiri, Retired Ministry Secretary D. Dissanayake, and Retired District Secretary Jayantha C.T. Bulumulla.
