The Palaly-Achchuveli main road was reopened today (01) on the directive of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, marking the first time in nearly 30 years that the road is accessible to the public. Closed during the nearly three-decade-long war, the road remained restricted even after the conflict ended over 15 years ago due to its passage through a major military camp.

Residents of the Northern Province have persistently advocated for the road’s reopening. In a recent discussion on October 22, Northern Province Governor Nagalingam Vedanayagam raised the matter with the President. Following this, President Dissanayake directed security forces to assess the current security situation and coordinate with the Ministry of Defense and Defense Secretary to facilitate the reopening.

The road’s reopening is anticipated to ease transportation and connectivity for the residents in the area, addressing a long-standing community request.
