The number of rat fever cases in Jaffna has surged rapidly with the onset of rains, as reported this morning (17). Cases at the Point Pedro Manthihei Special Treatment Unit and the Jaffna Unit have risen from 17 to 89 within just three days.

Seven patients have succumbed to the disease at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, while another death was reported at the Mullaitivu Hospital.

In response, vaccinations are being administered to farmers and fishermen, and antibiotics are being provided to sanitation workers across all Pradeshiya Sabhas in the district to curb the spread of the infection.
