The Fort Magistrate's Court has ordered the closure of a City Hostel in Colpetty where a 24-year-old British woman was staying before being admitted to the Colombo National Hospital due to an emergency.

The court order mandates the lodge remain closed until further investigations are completed and a report is submitted on its suitability for accommodation.

Colpetty Police, submitting a further report, informed the Fort Additional Magistrate that a German couple who were staying in the same room as the deceased are also receiving treatment in the hospital.

Authorities stated that the British woman and the German couple were hospitalized following sudden vomiting. Police are investigating whether food poisoning or other causes led to the incident.

Investigators are also probing the possibility of chemical poisoning, as the adjacent room had been fumigated with phosphine, a chemical used to kill bedbugs, on January 30. The room had reportedly been sealed for 72 hours following the treatment.

Following the woman's death, Public Health Inspectors sealed the hotel, and the Government Analyst's Department has initiated further investigations. The Acting Magistrate of Colombo Aluthkade No. 2 has conducted a preliminary inquiry, and the Government Analyst is scheduled to inspect the lodge today (03).

The British High Commission has informed the woman's relatives about her death.

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased British woman will undergo a post-mortem examination once her relatives arrive and formally identify her remains.

On Sunday (02), it was reported that three foreign nationals staying at a hostel on R.A. de Mel Mawatha in Kollupitiya had fallen ill and were admitted to the hospital. However, the 24-year-old British woman succumbed, while the other two, a German couple, are receiving treatment.

The investigation is being carried out under the direction of Kollupitiya Police OIC Chief Inspector Dushmantha Liyanage and OIC of the Criminal Investigation Division Sub-Inspector Manathunga, with officers including Police Sergeant Wasantha (3264) and Police Constables Jayasinghe (102027) and Sudheera (77429).
