Sri Lanka and the French Republic have officially signed a debt restructuring agreement related to the process of restructuring Sri Lanka's foreign debt.


The official signing ceremony took place yesterday (June 16) in Colombo. Mr. K.M. Mahinda Siriwardana, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, signed on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka. Mr. William Roos, Assistant Secretary and Director General of the Treasury for Multilateral Affairs, Trade, and Development Policy, signed on behalf of the French Republic.


The signing of this bilateral agreement with France marks a significant milestone in Sri Lanka's foreign debt restructuring process. It demonstrates the Sri Lankan government's commitment to swiftly completing debt restructuring to restore debt sustainability and consequently rebuild the nation's economy.


The French Republic has played a crucial role in leading Sri Lanka's foreign debt restructuring process, co-chairing the Official Creditor Committee alongside Japan and India. Its leadership, commitment, and effective engagement have contributed significantly to supporting Sri Lanka in overcoming the challenges of economic recovery.
