OVER 1,700 ILLEGAL FIREARMS SEIZED THIS YEAR

Sri Lankan police say they have seized 1,721 illegal firearms so far this year, with 38 suspects taken into custody for possessing weapons unlawfully.

Police spokesperson SSP Nihal Thalduwa said the seizures included 61 T-56 assault rifles, 62 pistols and 40 revolvers.

The arrests and recoveries were made during a series of raids carried out across the island.
