The Colombo Chief Magistrate, Asanga S. Bodaragama, today ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to submit a "statement of facts" on the charges against Sadhika Lakshani, the wife of alleged drug trafficker "Backhoe Saman," under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance.
The report, which must detail her involvement in the drug network, is to be submitted by the next hearing on October 9.
The suspect was re-remanded until that date.
Appearing for the prosecution, Deputy Solicitor General Suharshi Herath informed the court that the CID is currently investigating the suspect.
She stated that there is a pending case against Sadhika Lakshani and her husband at the Embilipitiya Magistrate's Court related to a 38-kilogramme heroin seizure in July 2022.
The suspects fled their area after the incident and obtained passports from the Vavuniya District Immigration Office.
She also noted that a red notice had been issued to the suspect.
The magistrate expressed his dissatisfaction with investigating officers' failure to provide a clear report to the court.
He ordered them to submit a detailed account of the charges filed against the suspect under both the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
The magistrate also stated that the court’s power to grant bail is restricted under Section 54 of the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance.
