The winter travel season has begun with Edelweiss Air, a Lufthansa Group member, operating its inaugural seasonal flight from Zurich, Switzerland, to Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake this morning (28).

The flight, Edelweiss WK-064, arrived from Zurich at 10:03 a.m., officially commencing the airline's scheduled seasonal operations between the two cities.

An Airbus A340 aircraft was used for the launch service, which was marked by a traditional water salute upon landing at the airport.

The inaugural flight carried 257 passengers—including 27 in business class and 230 in economy—along with 12 cabin crew members.

Edelweiss Air plans to operate the route twice weekly, with flights arriving at the BIA every Tuesday and Saturday throughout the winter period.

The return service departed from Katunayake to Zurich shortly after, at 11:45 a.m.
