Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe has presented a Certificate of Recognition to Visita Sirin Leelaratna, Buddhist Ambassador of the Buddhist Embassy (Canada), acknowledging fifteen years of devoted community service in advancing peace, compassion and unity within the nation's capital.
Presented recently in conjunction with Leelaratna’s birthday, the acknowledgment highlights his leadership in celebrating Vesak Month in Ottawa and in developing road signage for Buddhist temples throughout the city. His initiatives have enriched Ottawa's multicultural fabric and fostered greater cross-cultural understanding among diverse faith communities.
Leelaratna is also leading e petition 9e 6893) on the Parliament of Canada website to establish Buddhist Heritage Month. The campaign aims to gather between 500 and 10,000 signatures by March 4, 2026, advocating for equitable recognition of Buddhist communities and promoting the values of harmony, compassion and mindfulness throughout Canada.
Founded by Leelaratna, the Buddhist Embassy (Canada) serves as a bridge linking Buddhist communities, government authorities and diplomatic missions through year-round programs that honor cultural heritage and advance the timeless principles of compassion and peace.
With the aim of enhancing tourism, disseminating Buddhist teachings and attracting visitors, he also owns and operates the Sirin Park Eco Guided Tour in Horagampitiya, Hikkaduwa, which was established with an investment of Rs. 200 million.
