Vehicle registrations reached a record 59,734 units in March, significantly higher than 51,682 units in February. Growth was broad-based across nearly all categories, with two-wheelers contributing the most to the increase.
Motor car registrations rose to 4,856 units in March, up from 4,163 units in February, according to J.B. Securities.
Brand-new car registrations surged to 1,432 units in March—almost triple February’s 488 units—driven primarily by electric vehicles (EVs), which accounted for 1,171 units.
BYD led the segment with 807 units (almost entirely Atto 1 at 796 units), followed by BAW with 212 units (E7). Toyota ranked third with 132 units (including 85 Wigo), followed by Perodua with 106 units (Bezza 59, Axia 44).
EV registrations recorded 8,805 units in March, a sharp increase from 3,332 units in February.
Among motor cars, EVs accounted for 1,183 units, led by BYD with 808 units (Atto 1: 797, M6: 11), followed by BAW (212), Wuling (79), Kaiyi (29), and Dongfeng (15).
SUV EVs contributed 218 units, with GAC leading at 113 units, followed by BYD with 39 units (Seal Comfort: 39) and Changan with 36 units.
Two-wheelers dominated volumes at 7,195 units, led by Yadea (3,207), AIMA (1,123), Luyuan (1,011), and Nwow (294).
Three-wheelers recorded 186 units, with the Bajaj EVP5009 accounting for 103 units and the Mahindra Treo contributing 48 units.
