The Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (IRCSL), in collaboration with the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka (IASL) and the Sri Lanka Police Department, has announced the official implementation of Sri Lanka’s first Digital Motor Insurance Card.
The initiative marks a significant step in modernising the motor insurance ecosystem, advancing national digitalisation efforts, and strengthening public security. It also replaces traditional physical plastic insurance cards, contributing to environmental sustainability.
Under the new system, motor insurance policies can be verified digitally in real time by both vehicle users and law enforcement officers.
Police officers are now able to access insurance details instantly for quick and accurate roadside verification. Motorists and authorities can confirm insurance status through the Insurance Verification Centre via insurance company call centres by dialling 1338, sending an SMS to 1338, or using the USSD service *1338# for immediate validation.
The system is designed to ensure a smoother, paperless and more efficient verification process, with full digital access provided to both law enforcement officers and insurance companies.
