A Lance Corporal of the Sri Lanka Army has been remanded until May 8 after being arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption over allegations of accepting a bribe of Rs. 129,600, promising to help settle a retired soldier’s loan.
He was produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court and subsequently ordered to be remanded.
The accused has been identified as Lance Corporal Sajith Sameera Dissanayake of the Pandulagama Army Camp in Anuradhapura.
According to submissions made by the Bribery Commission to the court, the suspect had told the complainant that he could help settle his retirement loan and secure a financial assistance package of Rs. 2.5 million.
He had allegedly obtained the complainant’s loan details in that process.
It is further alleged that the suspect demanded Rs. 129,600 as advance payments on three occasions, claiming it was necessary to process the assistance.
The money was deposited into a People's Bank account provided by the suspect.
He had later requested an additional Rs. 13,457 to the same account, claiming it was required as documentation fees.
Following a complaint received by the Bribery Commission, investigations were conducted, and the suspect was arrested on April 30.
