“The understatement of the century is that the ceasefire is very fragile,” he said, adding that any “slight miscalculation” could result in a return to war.
But he said Trump will not want to restart the war while he’s on his trip to China.
Cafiero explained that Trump’s use of language, saying the ceasefire is on “life support”, is the US leader trying to frighten the Iranians into thinking that, unless they “capitulate to the White House’s maximalist demands”, their country is going to get “hit again”.
“This is very much Trump’s style: trying to use the threats of overwhelming military force to get other countries to budge. I think, however, it’s quite clear that the Iranians do not cave to these sorts of tactics.”
Cafiero said Trump’s attempts to bring Iran to “its knees” is a “misguided strategy” that isn’t bringing about the results Washington wants.
