International competitive tenders were called in June last year for 16 battery storage systems with a total capacity of 160 MW.
The projects were awarded to three selected companies, and six battery systems imported under this initiative by Windy Force (Pvt) Ltd arrived at the port today (30).
These six energy storage systems are planned to be installed near electricity transmission substations in Vavuniya, Chunnakam, Kilinochchi, Anuradhapura, and Polonnaruwa.
Each system will be able to store 40 MW of electricity during daytime and supply 10 MW to the national grid during peak demand at night.
Accordingly, the combined capacity from all six systems will be 60 MW.
