An investigation commenced into a group of drivers, conductors, and technical workers belonging to the Kandy region of the Sri Lanka Transport Board who submitted forged medical certificates to obtain sick leave by counterfeiting the official stamp and signature of a specialist doctor.

This fake medical certificate racket came to light due to a suspicion raised over medical certificates submitted by a group of employees at the Teldeniya Sri Lanka Transport Board depot, and the details were revealed when the Teldeniya depot manager sent a letter to the Director of the Kandy National Hospital inquiring about verifying the authenticity of the medical certificates.

The hospital director informed the depot manager in writing that although the specialist doctor named in the relevant medical certificates actually works at the Kandy National Hospital, the signature and official stamp on them are forgeries and do not belong to the said doctor.

Furthermore, certificates issued under the names of two medical officers purporting to work in the Outpatient Department of the Kandy National Hospital were also among the relevant medical certificates, and the hospital authorities informed that no doctors by those names work at the Kandy National Hospital.

This racket of submitting fake medical certificates is not limited to the Teldeniya depot, and similar forged certificates were submitted from several depots in the area, including the Kandy South depot, Sri Lanka Transport Board Kandy Regional Manager Prasanna Delanga stated.

An internal investigation was started by the Sri Lanka Transport Board regarding this matter, and an official complaint was also submitted to the Special Crime Investigation Unit of the Teldeniya Police regarding the incident.
