Once one of the world's worst environmental disasters, Aral Sea region is seeing signs of renewal.

Scientists in Uzbekistan are working with Chinese partners to cultivate salt-tolerant plants that can survive in the harsh, salt-covered soil left behind by the shrinking lake.

Their goal: restore ecosystems, reduce dust storms, and bring life back to degraded land.
