Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa claims that the government is intentionally delaying the Provincial Council elections due to fears stemming from the outcome of the recent Local Government elections.

He made these remarks today (06) during a special meeting with former Provincial Council members held at the Opposition Leader’s Office. The event was organised under the theme, “Defeat Anura’s Fear-Driven Delay of Provincial Council Elections.”

Premadasa alleged that the current administration had lost approximately 2.3 million votes within a short period following the General Election.

He further charged that the President and the government are reluctant to face the public through elections due to fears of losing even more voter support.

According to the Opposition Leader, the Provincial Council election represents the best opportunity for the public to respond to growing dissatisfaction and pressure faced by citizens.

Premadasa also urged voters to act wisely in future elections rather than voting based on political momentum, stressing that no party should be granted unchecked power and that only a fair majority should be given.

He accused the government of failing to fulfil promises such as reducing electricity tariffs by 33 percent and supplying fuel at port landing prices, alleging that those who came to power by capitalising on public hardship have now neglected the people.

The Opposition Leader further announced that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) would establish a National Provincial Council Operations Committee to pressure the government into holding the Provincial Council elections without delay.

He also rejected claims that Provincial Councils are “white elephants,” arguing that when properly implemented, they can deliver significant public services and even attract international investment.

Premadasa added that as the Provincial Council system is part of the country’s supreme law, he would not engage in what he described as contradictory positions such as “13 Plus” or “13 Minus” regarding the 13th Amendment.
