Operations officially commenced for WEAIR, a new Sri Lanka-based cargo airline backed financially and strategically by Luxembourg-based investment firm IOTC, adding a significant player to the air freight and logistics sector of the country.

The airline officially launched on June 6 at the Kingsbury Hotel in Colombo under the patronage of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath.

The launch of WEAIR reflects growing international confidence in the economic potential, strategic location, and entrepreneurial capacity of Sri Lanka, despite global uncertainties, Minister Vijitha Herath stated at the event.

Minister Vijitha Herath noted that the arrival of the airline serves as a timely and necessary investment to strengthen regional connectivity and domestic air cargo capacity. Whilst Sri Lanka positioned itself at a crossroads of international trade for a long time, the country relied heavily on external operators for cargo transportation, a situation that must change, the minister added.

Economic competitiveness increasingly relies on speed, reliability, and connectivity, meaning the new cargo carrier will directly support exports, e-commerce, pharmaceuticals, and regional supply chains, Minister Vijitha Herath observed.

WEAIR will initiate operations utilising a Boeing 737-800 freighter aircraft, with plans to expand its fleet and operational capacity in the future. The airline intends to connect Colombo with key destinations across South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and the wider Indian Ocean region.

The initiative aligns with the vision of the government to position Colombo as a major logistics and trade hub, according to the minister.

The project will likely create new employment opportunities for Sri Lankan youth and professionals whilst facilitating technology transfer and skills development within the aviation and logistics sectors.

Government officials, foreign investors, representatives of WEAIR, aviation industry stakeholders, and members of the media attended the launch event.
