Canada secured their first-ever World Cup victory with a dominant 6-0 thrashing of Qatar at BC Place in Vancouver, though the historic occasion suffered a somber turn following a severe leg injury to midfielder Ismael Kone. The injury left manager Jesse Marsch in tears and overshadowed a stellar performance that put the co-hosts top of Group B ahead of Switzerland on goal difference. Jonathan David starred for the Canadians, netting a superb hat-trick to spearhead the goal rush against a Qatari side reduced to 9 men.

The hosts opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Cyle Larin capitalised on a loose ball for a classic poacher's finish before David doubled the advantage 13 minutes later. Qatar's discipline collapsed shortly after when Homam El Amin received a straight red card for a professional foul on Tajon Buchanan, allowing David to claim his second goal in first-half stoppage time.

The match took a tragic turn in the second half when a heavy challenge between Assim Madibo and Kone resulted in the Canadian midfielder being stretchered off the pitch while inhaling painkillers. A video assistant referee review upgraded Madibo's initial yellow card to a red, leaving the Asian champions with 9 players.

Canada continued their relentless attack as Nathan Saliba curled in a spectacular 63rd-minute free-kick, celebrating by holding up Kone's jersey to the roaring crowd of 52,497. The disadvantage proved too much for Qatar, as Mohammad Al Mannai sliced an attempted clearance into his own net for an own goal before David rounded off his hat-trick in added time by driving a low effort past goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada to wrap up the historic victory.
