In a landmark achievement for Sri Lanka’s hospitality sector, Sofia Colombo has become the country’s first hotel to receive accreditation from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), marking a significant step forward for sustainable tourism in the island nation.

The certification, issued through Control Union—an accredited GSTC certification body since 2016—recognises Sofia Colombo’s commitment to sustainability across environmental protection, social responsibility and economic viability, while maintaining standards of refined luxury hospitality.

Sugath Illangakoon, General Manager of Sofia Colombo said the achievement positions it at the forefront of global travel trends, particularly as many countries, including those in the European Union, are expected to prioritise GSTC-certified properties from 2027 onwards.

“This certification enhances long-term business potential, setting Sofia Colombo apart as a leader in responsible tourism.”

At Sofia Colombo, sustainability is integrated into every aspect of the guest experience, from eco-conscious operational practices to community-driven initiatives aimed at promoting responsible tourism.

“Guests experience sustainability not as an add-on, but as a philosophy woven into every detail of their stay,” he said.

“This milestone is not the end of the journey, but the beginning of a new chapter. Sofia Colombo stands as a beacon of responsible tourism, demonstrating that luxury and sustainability can coexist in harmony, offering guests indulgence with integrity.”

The hotel also highlighted its celebration of Sustainable Gastronomy Day, noting its commitment to environmentally responsible dining practices.

On the occasion, chefs curated a special menu featuring locally sourced ingredients and mindful cooking methods designed to reduce environmental impact while celebrating biodiversity and culinary heritage.

“Sustainable Gastronomy Day is not simply about taste, but about values,” the hotel said. “It reflects the connection between farmers, culture and environmental responsibility, and reinforces the importance of protecting natural resources.”

By embracing eco-conscious dining and sustainable hospitality practices, Sofia Colombo said it continues to contribute to a more sustainable future while delivering a premium guest experience.
