Poson Poya can be described as a poya that marks a unique milestone in Sri Lankan spiritual history.

Known as a noble meritorious day when Arahat Mahinda Thera gifted the supreme Buddhism to the island of Sri Lanka, Poson Poya is not merely a religious festival but can also be described as a symbol of a spiritual revolution that directed the human mind, society, and state towards a righteous path.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa stated this in a message issued for Poson Day.

The message noted that the historic discussion that took place between Arahat Mahinda Thera and King Devanampiyatissa teaches that the true development of a society builds upon wisdom, dialogue, and understanding, rather than power or wealth.

This Dhamma message remains vital for our country today just as it was in the past.

People in our country who are pressured by numerous challenges require unity instead of division, loving-kindness instead of hatred, and justice instead of injustice.

Everyone must resolve on this meritorious day to make kindness, compassion, equality, and truthfulness—the essence of Buddhism—the core values of personal lives as well as the national path.

Reminding that all people representing diverse religions, nations, and cultures are children of one country, everyone should resolve to build a fair and prosperous Sri Lanka based on mutual respect, coexistence, and humanity.

Premadasa wished that loving-kindness replace hatred and justice replace injustice in all hearts on this day illuminated by the Poson moon.
