A firearm that went missing from the Yatiyantota Police traffic division officer-in-charge, has been found near the Kelani River close to the Yatiyantota bridge.

The Police Media Division confirmed that the Police Diving Unit recovered the weapon this morning (05) during a search operation.

The officer involved remains in remand custody until July 6, following an order issued by the Ruwanwella Magistrate’s Court.

The Sitawakapura Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau arrested the officer on June 27 regarding the disappearance of his service weapon.

Reports indicate that the officer took a pistol and 10 rounds of ammunition for duty on June 26 but failed to return.
