The driver who transported the shooters in the Akuregoda murder of a lawyer and his wife, confessed following his return from the Maldives.

The Western Province South Crime Division obtained a 90-day detention order for the suspect.

The lawyer and his wife were shot dead in front of a supermarket in Akuregoda on February 13.

The shooters fled in a car driven by the suspect, who was apprehended in the Maldives by a special Sri Lankan police team.

Maldivian immigration officials alerted Sri Lankan investigators when the suspect, who was subject to an Interpol Red Notice, arrived in the Maldives from Bahrain.

The 23-year-old resident of Ethkandura, Batapola, Galle, was flown from Malé to Katunayake International Airport on a SriLankan Airlines flight.

He remains in the custody of the Western Province South Crime Division, where he provided his confession during follow-up investigations.
