80 years of fierce tradition and intense schoolboy rivalry will culminate today when Royal College and Trinity College clash in the historic 80th Bradby Shield encounter.

The first leg unfolds tomorrow at the Royal College Sports Complex in Colombo, affectionately dubbed Jurassic Park, before the battle shifts to the Trinity College Rugby Stadium in Pallekele for the second leg on July 25.

The legendary encounter officially began in 1945 when Edward Lawrence Bradby, the principal of Royal College, offered a beautiful wooden shield adorned with traditional Kandyan silverwork to C. E. Simithraaratchy, the principal of Trinity College.

Though the two institutions first clashed on the rugby field on 31 July 1920, the introduction of the shield solidified a two-leg format where the winner is decided strictly by aggregate scores.

Over the decades, external events occasionally disrupted the drama.

The 1971 JVP insurrection forced the cancellation of the second leg, leaving Royal College with the shield after a single victory, whilst a global pandemic forced total cancellations in 2020 and 2021.

In the historical ledger, Trinity College holds a razor-thin advantage with 40 wins to the 37 victories of Royal College, whilst two series ended in frustrating draws.

Memorable milestones include the legendary 2002 series, where the Royal College side, captained by Zulki Hamid, set an untouched Bradby record by hammering their opponents 83-00 on aggregate.

More recently, the 2025 encounter saw Royal College reclaim the shield with a gritty 18-13 aggregate win, proving that previous form matters very little once this specific kickoff arrives.

The 2026 season carries immense weight as both schools meet an unprecedented four times in a single year. Trinity College enters as an untouchable juggernaut chasing a historic domestic treble.

Under the brilliant leadership of their talismanic fullback and captain Shan Althaf, Trinity College completed an unbeaten 9-0 campaign to secure the 2026 Schools Rugby League title, capping it off with a clinical 20-7 win over St. Peter’s College.

They also secured the President's Trophy knockout title in April by dismantling Royal College 58-26 at the Sugathadasa Stadium, ending a 15-year knockout drought.

Trinity College added further psychological damage with a 48-15 hammering during the league Super Round, bringing their total points against their rivals to 106 this season alone.

Key individuals will dictate the tempo of this milestone match.

For Trinity College, scrum-half Udan Wijekoon serves as the engine of the backline alongside explosive number eight Achintha Jayasena and young fly-half Abdul Malik, whilst flanker Nisith Kumarasinghe coordinates the defensive structure.

Royal College relies heavily on its stocky captain and number eight Disas Pathirana, alongside a hardworking flanking duo of Senuja Ranasinghe and Althaf Aman.

Tactical organiser and fly-half Mohomed Simak will look to unleash speedy winger Dinuka Perera to exploit any space out wide.

This 80th edition holds vastly different rewards for both camps.

For Trinity College, the shield represents the final glorious piece of an invincible season.

For a bruised Royal College side, it serves as the ultimate shot at redemption, pride, and the defence of their home turf.

Royal College enters with nothing to lose, aiming to replicate past seasons where they shook off heavy league defeats to fiercely protect the shield.

The talking stops this evening on Independence Avenue, where Trinity College will look to put the finishing touches on a flawless year, unless Royal College reminds them that logic does not apply to the Bradby.
