Cabinet approval has been granted for the establishment of a new renewable energy training centre under the Ceylon German Technical Training Institute (CGTTI), with an estimated investment of Rs. 398 million.

The proposed facility will be constructed on a 3.11-hectare plot of land in the Mayurapura Division of the Walawa Zone, which is owned by the Mahaweli Authority.

The project is being implemented following a Memorandum of Understanding signed on February 10, 2025, between the CGTTI and the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA), aimed at meeting the increasing demand for skilled professionals in the renewable energy sector.

The new centre will operate as a branch affiliated with the CGTTI and will be strategically located near the Kiribbanwewa Floating Solar Power Plant and the SLSEA Hambantota Training Centre, allowing trainees to gain practical experience.

The Government stated that the facility will become part of a wider renewable energy training hub focused on developing skilled technical personnel in areas such as energy efficiency, electrical and mechanical engineering, and renewable energy technologies including solar, wind, hydropower, and biomass.

The proposal to carry out the project using domestic funding was submitted by Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education Harini Amarasuriya and was subsequently approved by the Cabinet.
