Prefectural officials say the quake caused water outages for as many as 108,000 households at one point. They say the supply is gradually being restored, but water remains cut off for about 36,880 households in the cities of Yatsushiro and Uki and the towns of Hikawa and Kosa.
The officials say repair work for facilities storing treated water has mostly been completed, but damage to pipes connected to houses is preventing water from running properly.
Kosa had 150 households without water as of Thursday, but officials say the supply will be back on as early as this week now that they have a clear outlook on repairing pipes.
But restoring the water supply in all areas of Yatsushiro, Uki and Hikawa is likely to take until the end of this month as workers are checking for leaking pipes section by section.
