Silver Lake's potential acquisition of human-resources and financial management software firm Workday could strengthen struggling software valuations by demonstrating private equity confidence in the sector despite growing concerns over artificial intelligence disruption, analysts and investors stated on Friday.

Shares of Workday surged nearly 18 per cent on Thursday following reports of acquisition talks with Silver Lake, pushing the company's market value beyond 51 billion dollars. The market enthusiasm offered relief to a sector hit hard this year by fears that generative artificial intelligence tools capable of writing code might diminish the need for traditional software services.

If Silver Lake completes the buyout at a substantial premium, it will serve as strong evidence that public markets overreacted when discounting enterprise software due to artificial intelligence, Zacks Investment Research client portfolio manager Brian Mulberry stated.

Solid quarterly earnings from companies like ServiceNow further highlight the enduring value of software providers integrated into core business functions like finance and human resources, where switching platforms remains costly. This stability helped drive the S&P 500 Software & Services index up by roughly 25 per cent quarter-to-date.

SAP led a rally in European software stocks on Friday, following previous gains between 1.9 per cent and 4.5 per cent by American peers Salesforce, Adobe, and ServiceNow.

An acquisition of Workday would validate the firm's strong market position and long-term opportunity to automate back-office functions, according to Morgan Stanley analysts. The deal could also encourage other financial sponsors to regain confidence in software investments, driving stock prices up as short sellers retreat.
