Prison officials arrested a couple yesterday afternoon for attempting to smuggle heroin hidden inside a portion of chicken contained in a meal parcel meant for an inmate at the Kegalle Remand Prison, according to the Superintendent of the Kegalle Remand Prison.

It is reported that the couple, who arrived with food for an inmate, was detained and subsequently handed over to the Kegalle Police.

Police stated that the arrested man accepted responsibility for bringing the heroin concealed inside the chicken intended for his wife's uncle. Consequently, only the male suspect was detained.

Police further revealed that the suspect, a resident of the Vahawa Junction area in Rambukkana, had previously been arrested in connection with heroin offenses.

The suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Kegalle Magistrate's Court today.
