Another step in the programme to establish an integrated mechanism among state institutions through regional coordination during emergencies in prisons has been launched, focusing on the Vavuniya and Jaffna prisons.

This initiative was inaugurated under the patronage of the Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law Harshana Nanayakkara.

Under this programme, aimed at delivering prompt emergency responses and streamlining inmate welfare by creating an integrated regional framework among state entities—the establishment of the integrated mechanism centered around the Vavuniya Prison took place under the patronage of Minister Nanayakkara at the Vavuniya Prison this morning (26).

Efforts are underway to establish this integrated framework involving state institutions across every prison on the island, primarily aimed at emergency response and prisoner welfare. The Minister of Justice briefed state officials on the objectives behind setting up this integrated mechanism.

Following discussions regarding the establishment of the mechanism, the Justice Minister engaged in an inspection tour to assess the needs of inmates at the Vavuniya Prison, visiting both the female ward and the areas housing remand suspects.

Addressing the issue of delays in Government Analyst reports, the Minister informed the inmates that solutions to resolve these delays would be provided within approximately the next three months.

Vavuniya District Secretary P.A. Sarathchandra, Vavuniya Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Asita Gunatilake, and Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Vavuniya Division H.A.K. Indika Hapugoda, along with senior officers representing state bodies including the Water Supply Board, the Department of Prisons, the Sri Lanka Navy, the Sri Lanka Army, the Sri Lanka Police, the Jaffna Divisional Secretariat, and the Medical Officer of Health Office, were present on this occasion.
