The Education Ministry stated that the news circulating on social media noting that school children will be given free tablet computers by the Government and that there is an opportunity for students to register for the service is untrue.
Releasing a statement, the Ministry stated that a decision is yet to be taken regarding providing free tablet computers to children.
Recently, the proposal tabled by the Education Ministry to provide tablets as a digital learning aid to facilitate the teaching process of students was granted approval by the Cabinet of Ministers.
Accordingly, the first phase of providing tablet computers to school children and teachers from Grades 6 to 11 in rural schools in the country has already commenced.
The Ministry stated that under the first phase tablets will be provided for 1,401 schools based on different criteria. It includes 184 National schools and 1,218 provincial schools.
According to the first phase, tablet computers will be provided for 6,836 students and 9,941 teachers.
The Ministry also stated that all information regarding the provision of tablet computers will be announced in the future.
