Major General Lasantha Rodrigo was appointed as the 25th Army Commander of Sri Lanka today (30), following the conclusion of Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage's service extension, which ends tomorrow.
Previously serving as the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Army, Major General Rodrigo takes over the leadership role with extensive military experience.
Additionally, Rear Admiral Kanchana Banagoda was appointed as the new Navy Commander today.
Meanwhile, the Gajaba Regiment (GR) ceremonially bids farewell to one of their epic members of the Keterian family, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, Commander of the Army, on 29 December 2024. The event marked a significant moment of respect and gratitude for his exemplary service.
The formalities for the outgoing Army Chief commenced with a solemn floral tribute at the Regimental Monument, followed by a Guard Turnout presented by the GR troops to honour the outgoing Commander of the Army. A floral tribute to the statue of the Late Major General Wijaya Wimalaratne RWP RSP VSV USP psc, was conducted, as a gesture of paying homage to the Father of the Regiment. This was followed by a ceremonial parade, showcasing the Regiment’s pride and discipline.
Then, a group photograph with all participants was taken, capturing the spirit of unity and appreciation of the Regimental members. Marking the commemoration of the occasion, a sapling was planted within the premises.
During the All-Ranks Tea Session, the outgoing Commander of the Army interacted with Officers and Other Ranks of the Regiment, sharing thoughts and reflections on their journey.
The event concluded with the offering of a street line, where the troops of the Gajaba Regiment extended their heartfelt best wishes to the Army Chief as he departed.
Adding to the farewell formalities, a traditional Mess Night was held at the Officers’ Mess of the GR on the previous evening for the Army Chief.
The event was marked by camaraderie and respect, providing an opportunity for Officers to honour the legacy of the outgoing Commander of the Army.
