Cabinet approves import of Ponni Samba rice without license

Cabinet approval was granted at the meeting held on the 13th of last month to import the GR 11/Ponni Samba rice variety, classified under the Harmonized Classification Code 1006.30.29 (similar to Keeri Samba rice), without obtaining an Import Control License.

To enforce this Cabinet decision, the Import and Export (Control) Regulations No. 08 of 2025, formulated under the provisions of the Import and Export (Control) Act No. 1 of 1969, were published via the Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 2458/43 dated 2025-10-15.

The Cabinet approved the proposal presented by the President, as the Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, to submit the said regulations to Parliament for approval.
