Two-week program to begin repairing damaged irrigation systems

A two-week program to repair irrigation systems in the Badulla District damaged by Cyclone 'Ditwa' began yesterday (9).

The objective of this operation is to restore the water management networks for cultivation activities in the upcoming Maha season.

According to the Department of Irrigation, 1,020 irrigation systems across the district, including tanks, canals, dams, and anicuts, were damaged by the severe floods and landslides caused by the cyclone.

This program will run from December 9 to the 23 and cover 50 main work sites.

These repair works are being carried out as a joint voluntary operation with the participation of several parties.

These include the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Air Force, Special Task Force, Civil Security Department, Farmers' Organisations in Badulla, volunteers from Matara and Monaragala, as well as members of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society and government officials.
