Schools commence today

The second phase of the third school term, which was postponed due to the disaster situation affecting the island, commenced today (16).

However, the Ministry of Education stated that 640 schools in the Uva, Central, and North Western provinces, which were severely affected by the adverse weather, will not open today.

The Ministry also announced that these schools may commence on a date to be decided by the respective Provincial Directors of Education.

The second phase of the third term was originally scheduled to begin on December 08, but was postponed until today due to the adverse weather and resulting disasters.

Students affected by the disaster or facing transportation difficulties should be allowed to temporarily continue their education at the nearest school to their residence.

Zonal Directors of Education have been given full authority to make decisions regarding this matter.

School students have been granted the opportunity to travel free of charge on CTB buses and trains this month using their November term tickets.

The second phase of the third term, which begins today, will run until 22.

Schools will then be closed for the Christmas vacation from December 23 to the 28.

The third phase will recommence on 29 and continue until 31, concluding the academic activities for this year.

Academic activities for the year 2026 will commence on January 5.

The Ministry of Education also stated that academic activities for Grade 1 next year are scheduled to begin on January 22.
