Jeevan Thondaman to resign from CWC

Jeevan Thondaman, General Secretary of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) and Nuwara Eliya District Member of Parliament, has decided to resign from his position.

Reports indicate that he has informed several Vice Presidents of the party via telephone to convene the National Council of the CWC to formalise his departure.

A Senior Vice President of the CWC mentioned that the decision follows a heated telephone argument between Jeevan Thondaman and the current Chairman of the party, Senthil Thondaman.

This disagreement reportedly occurred after the 2026 budget proposal for the Agarapathana Pradeshiya Sabha—where the CWC holds the chairmanship—was defeated.

The senior official further stated that Jeevan Thondaman has requested CWC urban members in local government bodies—including Talawakelle-Lindula, Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council, Hanguranketha, Walapane, and Kotmale—to submit letters withdrawing their support for the government.

While the General Secretary provided notification of the National Council meeting via telephone, the Senior Vice President added that the council will only be convened if the request is submitted in writing.
