‘Mahasen’ still under treatment

Medical care for 'Mahasen', considered the tusker with the largest tusks in Sri Lanka, entered a new phase today (02) after the animal sustained gunshot wounds and injuries from a confrontation with another tusker.

Wildlife officials confirmed that the elephant has been receiving treatment for nearly two weeks.

The latest medical intervention was carried out by a team led by Wildlife Veterinarian Udadeshika Maduwanthi from Pandulagama, alongside officers from the Ganewalpola wildlife office.

Due to the tusker's advanced age, veterinarians are unable to use general anaesthesia.

Instead, they are administering necessary medications via injections while the animal remains mobile.

Officials noted that providing such treatment within the reserve requires immense effort and caution as they work to stabilise the iconic elephant's condition.
