The Colombo Chief Magistrate, Asanga S. Bodaragama, ordered the further remand of a retired navy sailor until February 3 regarding the alleged solicitation of a bribe for a school admission.
The suspect, identified as Ruwan Chaminda Soysa, reportedly demanded Rs. 300,000 from parents to secure a Grade 1 seat for their daughter at Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo.
Investigating officers from the Bribery Commission informed the court that the suspect had already accepted an initial payment of Rs. 100,000.
He was apprehended during a sting operation on the 14th in Narahenpita while accepting the remaining Rs. 200,000 from the parents.
While the defence counsel argued that his client did not accept a bribe and requested bail, the commission successfully moved for continued detention to facilitate ongoing investigations.
The Magistrate directed the commission to submit a progress report at the next hearing.
