Renovated Supreme Court complex officially opens

The Supreme Court premises within the Superior Courts Complex in Hulftsdorp, Colombo, underwent official inauguration yesterday (05) following extensive modernisation funded by the People's Republic of China. Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya presided over the ceremony, which marked the completion of the latest phase of the renovation project.

The renovation represents a commitment to strengthening the rule of law and democracy in Sri Lanka, according to Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara. During the event, he emphasised that the Supreme Court serves as the ultimate guardian of the constitution and that the upgraded facility stands as a testament to justice and fair governance.

The Chinese government provided a grant of 229 million yuan for the refurbishment of the complex, which it originally gifted to Sri Lanka in 1988. This follows the opening of the Court of Appeal section in January last year as part of the project's initial phase. Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Chinese Ambassador QI Zhenhong joined the Prime Minister for the ceremonial handover of the keys and the signing of the official completion agreement.
