The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has invited proposals for a new automated fare system designed to phase out cash payments across its national bus network.
The state-run operator intends to implement an "Open Loop" Automated Fare Collection system, allowing passengers to pay using bank cards and digital wallets. The project will span all 107 depots islandwide, introducing point-of-sale machines and a digital single-window for seat reservations and refunds.
According to the Request for Proposals issued this week, the SLTB is seeking a qualified local provider to manage the installation and long-term maintenance of the system. The initiative is a cornerstone of the government's broader strategy to digitise public services and reduce revenue leakage within the transport sector.
