Fraudsters operating in major cities like Maharagama are extorting money by posing as representatives of prominent mobile service providers, the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) warns.
Scammers reportedly approach pedestrians while wearing branded apparel to collect data on their current mobile service usage and monthly spending. They promote an enticing "new package" featuring unlimited calls for a fixed monthly rate of Rs. 2,000 or Rs. 3,000, provided the victim pays a one-time registration fee of Rs. 5,000.
The deception often involves a confirmation SMS sent upon registration to create an illusion of legitimacy. Victims typically discover the fraud only after encountering unexpected billing charges or finding that the promised services do not function without additional payments. While individual losses average approximately Rs. 5,000, a large number of citizens already fell victim to the scheme.
The public should exercise extreme caution and verify the identity of anyone offering mobile packages or SIM cards on the street. SLCERT emphasises the importance of confirming that such individuals are authorised company representatives. Furthermore, officials cautioned that these fraudulent activities might intensify and expand beyond Colombo during the upcoming festive season.
